The Achensee is one of the most beautiful lakes in Tyrol and the Austrian Alps. It glitters in azure blue, between the steep slopes of the Karwendel and Rofan mountains. The Achensee Lake is often called the “Tyrolean Fjord” – a homage to its elongated shape and idyllic setting. In this article we will take you to the most beautiful places at the Achensee, as well as the most spectacular photo spots and photo locations for landscape photographers.
Viewpoints: Hochiss mountain and Rotspitz mountain wall.
Indeed, it is sometimes a little crowded at the Rofan cableway, but the view from the summit of Hochiss mountain makes the two hour hike worth it none the less. The last few metres are relatively steep, so one has to reach the summit using the Rofan cable car from the Erfurter Hütte (Erfurter huts).
The view to the east of the Rofan Mountains and that of the Chiemgau Alps is picturesque.
When facing westerly direction one does not see the Achensee lake at all. Only the massive Rotspitz mountain wall climbing up. It is one of the most beautiful photo motives in the Achensee area as well as the view to the Inn valley.
Dalfazalm: Probably the most beautiful panorama hut at the Achensee
Around the Achensee there are many picturesquely situated huts. Our favourite is the idyllic Dalfazalm (alpine pature). It is easy to reach from the Rofanseilbahn cable car, but those who wish to, can get there via a climb of Hochiss mountain. Delicious Tyrolean specialities and a picturesque view of the Achensee lake are waiting for you there.
The small village of Pertisau – probably the most beautiful Achensee lake motif
A beautiful view of Pertisau can be enjoyed on the eastern shore of Achensee. Directly at the public bathing beach (free of charge parking) in the town of Maurach (near Atoll Wellness clinic) there is a fantastic photo spot too.
Alternatively, there are two parking bays on Achenseestraße (street), which offer an outstanding view of Pertisau with the Falzthurn valley behind it.
Photo point: Dalfazer waterfall with fixed rope route – via ferrata
The Dalfazer waterfall is one of the most popular photo locations at the Achensee. An approximately 1-hour hike leads well described (yellow signposts) from Maurach always uphill to this natural idyll.
Especially on hot summer days in June, when the snowmelt is not yet over, an extremely pleasant way to cool off.
The sporty ones can also tackle the short, but beautifully situated via ferrata here. Borrow the via ferrata set in advance and bring it with you!
Our other favourite challenging hikes in this area are at the Seekarspitze and Seebergspitze mountains.
Viewpoint: Bärenkopf Mountain – great hike and ski tour for experienced hikers
probably most beautiful view of the “Tiroler Fjord” is from Bärenkopf mountain. If the 1000 meters of altitude difference are too much for you, you can shorten the mountain hike with the Karwendel cable car. But be careful: the last 200 metres of altitude difference are steep and partly exposed and only recommended for experienced hikers.
The tour also offers fantastic skiing in winter. Please always pay attention to all avalanche conditions and warnings.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to hike, the view from the top of the Karwendel cable car station in Pertisau is also quite attractive.
Get your private guide for this tour to Bärenkopf Mountain, enjoy not only the most instagramable view of Achensee, but also get the best tips for your photography from our professional guides. Yes, they also guide you safely up and down the mountain and make sure your trip is an unforgetable on.e
Interesting facts about nature and mountain photography at Achensee lake

By train: Get to Jenbach station. From there take the bus (bus stop on the south side of the station) to Maurach (south bank) or Achenkirch (north bank). You can go to Pertisau from Maurach by bus, boat or on foot. Likewise, the nostalgic Achensee-Bahn(train) runs from Jenbach station to the Achensee stop. The cheapest and fastest option definitely bus.
What to consider
Many of the parking spaces are subject to a charge, and on sunny weekends, during Christmas and summer holidays it gets crowded more often. The early bird catches the worm.
Weather and snow
Often there is still snow well into May! Also, the onset of winter in October or November can make a hiking tour more difficult. Here you have to adapt to nature. Without knowledge and skills you should not go into the free snowy mountain world!
Another danger is summer thunderstorms. They can move up quickly in the Alps and become dangerous. In any case, it is advisable in case of doubt to ask locals, who know the mountain world better than the average flatland Tyrolean.
Important: When photographing, please respect the environment and property, some of these photo spots are located on private property.
