Photo spots Austria: The most beautiful places for photographers

The most beautiful places in Austria attract photographers like magic. Austria’s fascinating places for photographers are also mostly the most beautiful landscapes. It is, therefore, not surprising that there are large queues of visitors at the Natural History Museum in Vienna, that there is a lively rush in the old town of Salzburg or in Hallstatt (and that some of the visitor numbers have to be curbed!). If you go to this list of the most beautiful photo spots, you must expect not to be the only photographer.

It is important to us that you observe the following basic rules when searching for a photo location:

  • Don’t leave any garbage! In case of doubt, leave the photo spot cleaner than you found it in.
  • Follow the special rules on site: Some of the photo spots mentioned are located on private property, treat it as if it were your own property and treat the owners with respect and gratitude. Some specific rules apply to the publication of these locations, you should follow them as well.
  • Respect other photographers, people, animals and nature. We only have one life and one planet. It would be a pity if we could not enjoy the beauty of nature together and not preserve it for posterity.

If you follow these basic rules, you will not only secure a beautiful photo experience for yourself, but you will also be able to enjoy the most beautiful photo locations for landscape photographers in Austria together with others. It is a well-known adage that joy increases when you share it.

We would love to share your joy with you by viewing the pictures of your discovered photo spots in an overview with the best photo spots in the Alps and Europe. You are cordially invited to share your photo spots with us. Or, if you want, we can even take you to a photo tour or photo hike at these places.

The photo spots in the capital Vienna: Riesenrad, Museumsquartier and Schönbrunn Palace

Oh, Sissi! Yes, Franz! Since the capital of Austria was the residence of the imperial and royal families, Vienna is the center of impressive historical buildings and sights. Each and every location is a sight to behold!

The Karlskirche
1 The Karlskirche

Austria is home to the Kunsthistorisches (Art History) Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the Albertina, the State Opera, Parliament, Karlspatz, Town Hall, Folklore Museum, the Secession and many more. Those who want to visit these museums, alone, will need several days even without taking photos!

Our suggestions are the Schönbrunn Palace, the square “between the museums” (Museum of Art History and Museum of Natural History) and the Riesenrad am Prater (Giant Ferris Wheel at the Prater).

The city in the Alps: Golden Roof and more – Photo tour in Innsbruck

The Innsbrucker Paradeblick

Innsbruck is uniquely surrounded by mountains. The Tyrolean capital is known worldwide for its beautiful old town and even more for its unique vantage points.

Our favourite photo spot is not the colorful houses on the market square, but the Unibrücke bridge with a view of the old town in a slightly hazy weather. If the weather is nice, you can enjoy the view of the Nordkette from the market square and the Inn and the colorful houses in front of it are a “must-have” photo for your Insta.

Fancy a photo course in Innsbruck? We offer you unique photo tours, photo courses and workshops lasting several days in the city and in the mountains.

Innsbruck, the second: Innsbruck from above

6 Innsbruck!

Innsbruck is enclosed between the Karwendel and the main Alpine ridge. The Nordkette and the Patscherkofel are probably the only high alpine points that can be reached directly from the city without effort.

In the middle of the city center, lies the congress station, where the Nordkettenbahn cable car goes takes you in a mere 30min to the breathtakingly high alpine terrain of the Karwendelgebirge. The valley view from up here to the Inn Valley and Innsbruck is majestic.

The most beautiful photo spot in the Salzburger Land: Zell am See with Kitzsteinhorn

In the Salzburger Land lies one of the most popular sights of the Alps with Arab tourists: Zell am See – which is spoken with Arab impact: “Silammsi”.

The Arab guests have chosen this place as a place of longing because of its outstanding beauty and the connection to one of the most famous Muslim legends. Not a bad choice! The European photographer’s eye finds this out as they reach the spot: it’s an outstandingly good one!

Salzburg Castle Mirabell with Mirabell Garden and Fortress Hohensalzburg

The Austrian city lies on the border with Germany, and the Salzach flows through its center. Salzburg is famous and especially popular as it is known as Mozart’s birthplace and because of its picturesque location on the northern slope of the Alps. On several hills in and around the city, you can stroll comfortably and catch charming views.

A few meters north of the old town is Mirabell Castle with its famous Mirabell Garden. The probably most romantic and cheesy wedding pictures from Europe often come from here.

But the Mirabell Garden is also a real eye-catcher for a quiet hour of photography. The admirably precisely laid out garden is geometrically perfect with the Hohensalzburg fortress.

Hallstatt: the most famous sight in Austria?

Austria Hallstatt!
10 Probably the most famous photo spot in Austria Hallstatt!

Hallstadt is probably the world’s most famous sight outside Vienna in Austria. Hundreds of thousands of tourists come to the picturesque town on Lake Hallstatt in Upper Austria.

The small village is so famous among Asian tourists that a copy of the village was built in China! The view from the lake to the picturesque village and the Dachstein massif behind it is a desire to see for many.

The point is located directly on the lake and cannot be missed.

Sunset on the mountain

Sunset on the mountain
11 A simple means: the rule of thirds. Place the horizon in the upper third, in the middle third you show the landscape and in the lower third there is a foreground.

The most beautiful lighting is always in the morning and the evening when the sun is low. A sunset on the mountain is a special experience apart from its exquisite lighting effects. You can find great sunsets or sunrises in many places in the Austrian Alps.

You will find great locations at several mountains in Tyrol, and to recommend a single one here, would be almost an offense.

In order to experience a sunrise or sunset on the mountain, the location is not much of a decisive factor, but rather the timing as well as the weather! The courage to start in the dark, early in the morning (doesn’t getting up at 2.30 a.m. sound tempting? ;)) or to walk for several hours at night through dark woods over sticks and stones also counts.

Olperer hut and the Instagram worthy bridge in the Zillertal valley

The Zillertal in Tyrol

The Zillertal in Tyrol is well known among skiers. Four large ski resorts stretch from Jenbach to Hintertux. The most popular Instagram photo spot in the Zillertal is the suspension bridge at the Olperer Hütte.

A small suspension bridge stretches across a mountain stream, with a view of the Schlegeis reservoir and the Hintereisferner massif in the background. An impressive view and a beautiful hike.

The Tyrolean Fjord: Photolocations at Lake Achensee

Tyrolian Fjord
13 View from Bärenkopf in autumn (October)

Probably the most beautiful view of the “Tyrolian Fjord” is from Bärenkopf. If you find the hike of 1000 meters of altitude too much, you can shorten the hike with the Karwendel cable car. Nevertheless, be careful: the last 200 meters of altitude are steep and partly exposed and only recommended for experienced hikers.

The tour is also offered in winter for a wonderful ski tour (avalanche location must be observed).

Alternatively, if you don’t want to hike, the view from the top station of the Karwendel mountain railway (Pertisau) is also pretty nice.

Photo hiking in Tyrol. e.g. in Sellrain Valley

Photo hiking in Tyrol. e.g. in Sellrain
 Pforzheim hut

The Sellrain is a small, relatively unspectacular area near Innsbruck and for Tyrol, surprisingly lonely and natural. An excellent place to relax, experience nature and capture its beauty in pictures is the Sellrainer Hüttenrunde. Here, you can still experience mountains in their original beauty.

Most beautiful place in Western Austria: Lake Constance – Bregenz

Most beautiful place in Western Austria: Lake Constance - Bregenz

We suggest a picture in the far west of Austria to capture a beautiful sunset live at Lake Constance.

If you find Bregenz or the island of Lindau too crowded, you will find peace, nature and sometimes a delicious ice cream at the harbour in Hardt and the adjacent nature reserves. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Constance, which has a long stretch.

Important: When photographing please pay attention to environment and property, the photo spot is on private ground.
