Head on to Heidelberg for one of the finest photo tours in Germany! Heidelberg is not only one of the most famous student cities in Germany and a tourist magnet, but also a really good spot to make a small photo hike around the old town.
Tip: Best time to discover Heidelberg for a photo tour is in autumn. It’s less crowded than in winter with the christmas markets madness, colors are more vivid and it’s usually not that cold ;)
Many people are familiar with the old town of Heidelberg. This is not surprising since it lies at the geographical mouth of the Neckar into the upper Rhine valley. The Odenwald also closes with the old town to the Rhine Valley, which is up to 80 km away. This geographical peculiarity is not only very pleasing to us Central Europeans, but also to numerous tourists from all over the world.
Discover Heidelberg on a photo tour in the fall.
Heidelberg has probably already been photographed from all angles and corners by countless people, and not without good reason. The rather well preserved (rather a rarity in northern Baden-Württemberg) old town nestles between the hills of the Odenwald along the Neckar river from the west to the Karlstorbahnhof. The famous castle with the largest wine barrel in the world is accompanied by all kinds of exciting legends and sits above the actual old town.
Those who want to see Heidelberg from the most beautiful angles during a photo tour should not just stay in the old town, but also take the 1-2 hour walk along the Philosophenweg. From the northern side you have a particularly harmonious view of the old town, the castle and the Kaiserstuhl and some seats on the sun terraces invite you to linger.
Photo tour Heidelberg – Sunset
At sunset there are many beautiful places in Heidelberg. My personal favourite is the terrace next to the castle. The gaze wanders in the last sunlight from the old town to the Palatinate Forest, where it ultimately disappears behind the horizon. Photographically, this location is beautiful, but requires some experience to take balanced pictures with you. Photographers often take full pictures in the evening sun and have the shady sides of the castle and houses in the foreground.
Directions Photo tour Heidelberg
Start at the Old Bridge in the Old City. Cross the river and follow the signs up to Philosophenweg (Philosophers way). It leads you uphill for a around 15-20 minutes.
Once you reach the top part follow the signs until you find a nice spot to to take a picture. Enjoy the scenery and then follow the signs back down to the old city. Cross the old bridge and go straight. You will at some point find directions to the Old Castle. Follow them uphill (or take the tram).
Go around the castle to the gardens. On your left you will see the big terrasse. Go there and take the perfect sunset photo of the illuminated castle and the Old city. After sunset walk back down to the old city centre.
