TOP-3 Sunrise/Sunset Photo Spots in German Alps + Tips & Tricks

Rise and shine, or sleep tight, it doesn’t matter in sunrise and sunset nature photography. If you are in the right place, at the right time, with the right image-capturing device (and if you are lucky), your portfolio is in for a treat. Mountain Moments will tell you where to find such sights in the German Alps, in another top-3 blog post.

What will you learn from this blog?

  • Which locations in the German Alps present prime opportunities for sunrise and sunset photography
  • How to access these locations and how easy or difficult they are
  • How to make the most of this kind of photography, including when to be on location

Let’s begin with our list!

Sunrise/Sunset Photo Spot Number 1: Hochfelln Trip in the Chiemgau Alps

Hochfelln mountain in the Bavarian Alps provides beautiful sights both at sunrise and sunset, just make sure you are on location 45-60 minutes before dawn or sundown. Panoramic beauty is yours for the taking. This tour starts either in Ruhpolding.

In summer, photos are particularly good at sunrise and sunset: on the Hochfelln we are higher than the surrounding mountains and can experiment with the play of light for a long time.

This 16-kilometer route is graded “medium” in difficulty and can be covered in under 6 hours. Refreshment possibilities are provided by Hochfelln House, Bründling Alm, Steinberg Alm, and Ruhpolding.

Sunrise/Sunset Photo Spot Number 2: Sun Rays Above Gottesacker

Hoher Ifen in the Allgäu Alps is an impressive exposed location perfect for hiking/photography opportunists. Steep walls, surrounding peaks, and grassy slopes can be found between Söllereck and the Fellhorn summit, and the journey begins at the mountain station of the Söllereckbahn.

But even without the risk of falling, the generally typical Allgäu mountain landscape with the steep grassy areas is an interesting photo motif. At sunset, with a bit of luck, you can catch an interesting play of colors (don’t forget your headlamp!).

This medium-to-difficult trail is 14.5 kilometers long and can be covered in under 6 hours by experienced hikers. Rest stops/huts are plentiful: Auen Hütte, Ifen Hütte, Alpe Ifersgunt, Alpe Melköde, and Schwarzwasser Hütte.

Sunrise/Sunset Photo Spot Number 3:  1722 Meters High on Wallberg Mountain

In Mangfall Alps, on the 1722-meters high Wallberg Mountain, you can find Wallberg chapel and a truly beautiful summit panorama. This location is very popular in the paragliding world as well, not only among the hikers who want to see Lake Tegernsee from the ground.

The most striking motif is the Wallberg chapel in an atmospheric Alpine foothills setting. At sunset, it stands in the sun for a long time on the summit and is particularly atmospheric.

A 12.5-kilometer hiking trail shown on this map is graded “medium” in difficulty and can be covered in approximately 5 hours. The refreshments stops available are Rottach-Egern, Wallbergmoos restaurant, Wallberghaus, and Wallberg mountain station. This tour starts at the Wallbergbahn car park.

What to keep in Mind When Photographing Sunrises and Sunsets?

Here are a few more sunrise/sunset tips every photographer should know:

  • A tripod is a must-have. Long before the event, being sunrise or sunset, set your camera on the desired location and preferably – to avoid shaking – use a wired or wireless remote shutter release or a phone app (if applicable)
  • Photographs can often be drastically improved with simple post-processing. For example, reframing can remove part of the sky you don’t need, and this can transfer the focus as you are removing unnecessary areas. With that, you can also make the photograph more eye-pleasing by potentially pushing it more into the frame of the “rule of thirds”
  • Outer worldly and intimate as it seems, nature doesn’t care about your arrival and intentions, so your perfect planning can be easily overshadowed by weather conditions and clouds. Since there is nobody to get mad at, the only thing to do is to admit your defeat, take what is available, make your next plans, and hold your fingers crossed the conditions are perfect
  • Most people heard about the blue hour and golden hour in photography. In case of confusion, here is a brief explanation for both terms: “golden” and “blue” refer to the colors that happen before/after sunrise/sunset, so the holden hour happens after sunrise and before sunset, while the blue hour happens before sunrise and after sunset
  • This may be very obvious, but it is actually underutilized by some less experienced photographers. It’s very simple: take as many photos as you can during the sunrise or sunset
