Green meadows with idyllic alpine huts scattered here and there, like an illustrated page out of a fairytale book. Behind them, Langkofel and Plattkofel mountains provide the perfect background to the Seiser Alm, naturally attracting many landscape enthusiasts and photographers, both in summer and winter and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the Alps. It is not without reason that the author has been there almost a dozen times for both hiking and photography.

Seiser Alm photo spots: The most beautiful viewpoints for photographers

A classic photo spot can be found near the cable car station in the picturesque town of Sankt Ulrich. You can take great photos directly from the road or just wander around the surrounding paths, between hotel Icaro and the ‘Biotop Moos’ nature park, immersing yourself in this amazing landscape.

By the way, the Seiser alpine pasture is not located at the ‘Three Peaks’ mountains. The mountains in the background of the many famous pictures taken of Seiser Alm are called Langkofel and Plattkofel. The Three Peaks are a few valleys further on and the journey takes 2-3 hours by car!
The trip is also possible by bus, but it takes about 4-5 hours.

Directions
From the alpine village of Seis am Schlern you will pass through:
  • the municipality of Sankt Ulrich
  • the Grödner Joch mountain pass
  • Alta Badia vally
  • Passo Valparola mountain pass
  • Passo Falzarego mountain pass
  • the town of Cortina d’Ampezzo
  • Lago di Misurina lake

Eventually arriving at Auronzo Hütte.

This trip takes place on a road toll so be prepared for about 30 Euro per car.

The most popular photo spot on the Seiser Alm. Reachable on the path between Monte Icaro (Hotel Icaro) and the cable car station of Ortisei. you will find a small hidden hiking trail a bit further down the path follow it for a spectacular view of the Contrin alpine refuge

Sunrise and sunset at the Seiser Alm

Every landscape photographer knows that sunrise and sunset often provide the most beautiful natural light of the day.

If you want to take pictures of Seiser Alm at sunrise or sunset you have three possibilities:

  • You stay in a hotel or a hut in Seiser Alm which is in most cases not quite cheap, but beautiful none the less.
  • You go to the valley by foot in the early morning or late in the evening. Alternatively, it may be more comfortable going up or down by bicycle.
  • You go by car. Access is allowed up to Kompatsch farm. This changes sometimes because the small parking can sometimes be full. Please Pay attention to the local notes!

Route description: A half day tour from Seis am Schlern village to the Austrian municipality of Sankt Ulrich.

From Seis am Schlern village you can take the bus or cable car to Kompatsch mountain station. The main path you want to be on runs from here. Follow the hiking signposts and take the direction of Saltria/Hanne and Paula-Steger-Weg to the east.

Half day Photospot hike to Seiser Alm


After about 800m, cross the main road and continue along the Steger-Weg through the gentle hills and small tree formations on the wide hiking trail. Finally, the path descends for about 80m and the view opens up to the right.

Next, follow the path downhill to the crossroad. Take a sharp left and walk along the road to the first crossroad, keeping right where the path splits and traveling in the direction of the Monte Icaro to Sankt Ulrich cable car. Follow the path and the famous biotope landscape, which you know from the the popular pictures taken of this area, opens up on the right.

Some Nice places you can take rest and get some refreshments are the Contrin alpine refuge and the rustic Sanon hut. When you are done here you are welcome to discover one of the many other possible paths back – please stay on the paths though. At some point, you will come to the small road that goes uphill to the cable car station you can take back to Sankt Ulrich. From Sankt Ulrich Take the bus back using the bus stop at the bottom station on other side of the river at the main road.

Tip: For this tour it is best to use the bus/cable car, the ascent by car to the Seiser Alm is very strictly regulated. Currently, a fine here costs about 120 Euro.
