Here at Mountain Moments, we like to share our passion and knowledge with others. In a world where you always learn and never reach perfection, it is always good to give depth to existing understanding, while sharing what we already know with hikers and photographers that enjoy nature as much as we do. On a Campanile di Val Montanaia hike, we are talking about a clear win-win situation.

Are there still real insider tips in the Dolomites? The Friulan Dolomites are not completely unknown, but little frequented. The region east of Cortina d’Ampezzo is hardly used for tourism and therefore only known to real mountain fans and local connoisseurs.

Yet the region has similarly beautiful rock formations as the well-known corners of the South Tyrolean Dolomites. Massive rock faces, steep needles, and deeply cut scree valleys are the characteristics of this region. For hikers and photographers seeking difficult pathfinding and solitary experiences, the Friulan Dolomites have much to offer in terms of tranquility, adventure, and nature.

Photo: Stefan Hefele. The landmark of the region is the unique rock needle Campanile di Val Montanaia, about 300 meters high. It stands in the middle of a mountain basin and surrounded by equally imposing Dolomite peaks. Although the hike to the viewpoint at the rock needle is so imposing, it is (still) an absolute insider tip. Here at Mountain Moments, we have many more tips to share with you

Directions! This is how your visit to Campanile di Val Montanaia looks like on a map

From the parking lot of the Pordenone hut, follow the hiking trail to the hut. From there take the slightly ascending Dolomite trail no. 6. After about 300 meters, keep to the right at the prominent crossroads and turn off in the direction of Campanile di Val Montanaia.

The trail rises sharply and runs through rough terrain to the Campanile di Val Montanaia (2173m). Already below the rock needle it is worth taking a few pictures.

Then continue uphill and climb to the ridge above the needle. Here is the bivouac and the striking photo spot in front of the rock formation. Then, depending on your mood, follow the path for another few hundred meters and turn back if the opportunity arises. Do yourself some good and enjoy the silence and solitude extensively.

Afterwards, descend along the same path. Tip: In principle, the undertaking can be extended to a circular tour over the Forcella Cimoliana and the former Dolomite trail no. 6. In this case the tour is a demanding and alpine hike.

In the region there are extreme heavy precipitations. Therefore, many paths and especially the gorge at the Forcella Cimoliana require a very well-developed sense of direction. Usually there are only a few trail markings and at times there is a high risk of falling rocks.

Photo tips that will make your Instagram pop – a better way to capture Campanile di Val Montanaia

The only known photo spot of this tour is the eponymous rock needle Campanile di Val Montanaia. For the most impressive perspective, we recommend climbing a few dozen vertical meters above the needle in the cauldron.

If you’re lucky, you can catch a climber on the needle and include it as an additional picture element in your photo: the perfect way to bring out the size relation.

The view from Cimoliana Scharte to the east is also impressive. When location scouting here, pay special attention to falling rocks and the unstable rock
