On the main Alpine ridge, there are some old military trails in high alpine terrain. Few of them, however, are as perfectly suited for bikers as on the Brenner border ridge.

At an altitude of around 2000m, the old road, which due to weathering is in part only a narrow hiking trail, winds its way along the glacially abraded meadow slopes.

Deep views in the direction of Pflerschtal and Brenner are added to the trail pleasure without any skirmishes. And as a bonus, trail riders, whether professional or beginner, will find pleasant ways to have fun crushing the experienced elevation gain.

Route description! This is how your bike tour in Innsbruck looks like on a map

From Steinach am Brenner station, first take a side road via Nößlach to Vinaders. From here uphill to the Sattelbergalm. Via the hiking trail or the signposted bike trail along the popular Alpencross route up to around 1900m on the Grenzkamm road.

Follow the military road for some time until hiking trail no. 1 to Gossensass is signposted on the left. The trail begins with wonderful meadow flow and leads at the height of the forest now easier and flatter through many easy hairpins bends almost down to Gossensass. The last meters are on the roads back to the train station.

Return by train to Brenner and change to Innsbruck or on the well-maintained and marked bike path to Brenner. From the Austrian side, only the main road can be used. This leads efficiently and almost continuously slightly downhill to Innsbruck.

There is one interesting alternative. From the Brenner border ridge there is a challenging variant on trail no.32 into the Pflerschtal valley. The trail ends in Ast and you then roll out the Pflerschtal to Gossensass. This variant is technically demanding.

Photo tips that will make your Instagram pop – Grenzkamm panorama

The most popular views and the most beautiful panorama can be found on this tour along the Grenzkamm. In addition to the panorama, the remaining and largely dilapidated military border installations are equally interesting as “lost places” for photographers.

On the trail, the first sections above the timberline with a deep view to Gossensass are certainly the most impressive.

The old military road on Brenner Mountain Ridge is still in very good conditions and makes for a perfect MTB ride nowadays. Depending on the weather, this southside tour may be rideable as early as late April
