The Best Photo Vantage Point in Switzerland? Backpack and Discover Saxer Lucke!

The Best Photo Vantage Point in Switzerland? Backpack and Discover Saxer Lucke!

With an almost surreal number of imposing views, this tour in the Alpstein Massif scores points. The hike along the Stauberenfirst leads the photo hiker to one of the most famous photo spots in Switzerland: the Saxer Lücke (Saxer Gap). This hike decribes the best photo spots for Saxer Lucke and Lake Fählen (Fählensee) an the Alpstein area. All Infos for hikers included.

The catchphrase, “life was more simple back then” can probably be attributed to photography too, with way-back-when generations of cameras having a lot fewer buttons and editing opportunities. But with photo occasions that nature provides us with, we can’t be anything else than grateful for seemingly unlimited memory space and flexibility on our favorite time-freezer contraptions. Take the Swiss Alps for example, and the Saxer Lücke destination we cover here. If you are a photographer and a nature lover with experience in hiking, this is the place to be.

Almost vertically, the rock slabs rise from the Rhine valley almost 2000 meters above sea level and culminate in strikingly curved rock slabs.
Almost vertically, the rock slabs rise from the Rhine valley almost 2000 meters above sea level and culminate in strikingly curved rock slabs. The Saxer Lucke is nothing but an amazing sculpture made by nature.

No less impressive is the Fählensee, which is only a stone’s throw away. Elongated and carved into steep, furrowed rock massifs, the dark blue mountain lake rests between Altmann and Saxer First: Magical places, linked by a single hike, that invite photography and contemplation.

Directions! This s how your hiking trip in the Swiss Alps looks like on a map

Take the cable car up to the Hoher Kasten, here descend once around the summit structure. At the second junction keep left towards Stauberen/Saxer Lücke. From here on, finding the way is easy: always follow the path along the ridge towards Saxer Lücke. From the Saxer Lücke descend steep downhill to the Bollenwees hut and down to the Fählen lake.

Finally, back to the inn and along the road. After one crossing keep slightly right on a path to Oberst/Rainhütten (1438m) and continue along the Laker Sämtis (Sämtisersee). (From here on some paths are possible, just keep always in direction Brülisau). At the next corssing go over Brüllenstein (1286m) and climb via Strubenböhl into the valley.

Arriving at the road, follow it to the right and finally to the starting point of the valley station of the Hoher Kasten cable car, which can be seen from afar.

The paths are very well developed. Some exposed areas (rope-secured) have to be mastered and require surefootedness and some head for heights.

Photo tips that will make your Instagram pop – 360° viewpoint at Hohe Kasten

The Hohe Kasten is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful, effortlessly accessible 360° viewpoints in Switzerland. The entire path towards Saxer Lücke is a single photo paradise. The famous photo spot Saxer Lücke with the striking Chrüzberg and the Rhine Valley as a motif is best photographed between Hochhus and Saxer Lücke along the hiking trail.

Directly at the Bollenwees inn are the most beautiful vantage points of Lake Fählen with the striking Altmann as a massive mountain flank in the background of the picture. It is worthwhile to linger here and hope for a windless, glassy lake.
