Hiking in Geigelstein! Enjoy and Capture Fabulous Panoramic Views

Geigelstein, a mountain of Bavaria (Germany) is known for its astonishing panoramic views, but it still flows in the realm of “insider tips”. However, there is no real reason this location is not as popular as it could be, and by visiting it, many hikers and photographers ask themself, “Why didn’t I visit earlier?”.

Mountain Moments “train” is taking passengers for one 15.5-kilometer route, and we have prepared everything: map, expert hiking tips and tricks, and photography workshops that will help you make the most of your camera.

What’s so special about this hiking route? This is what awaits you on the location

The fabulous all-around view goes from Lake Chiemsee over the Berchtesgaden Alps in the north. To the south, the main Alps inspire us with the Hohe Tauern, the Loferer Steinberge, and the Wilder Kaiser. Turned a bit further and we look down to the Inn Valley and the majestic Karwendel Mountains.

At 1808 meters, the Geigelstein is the third highest peak in the Chiemgau Alps. The climbs, which are not exactly short, are in principle possible from several sides. When arriving by public transport, attractive crossings that offer many different perspectives can be a worthwhile alternative.

Directions! This is how your hiking adventure looks like on a map

The starting point is at the Geigelsteinbahn car park (626m). Here follow the signs to Geigelstein / Breitenstein / Wuhrsteinalm and Berghotel Breitenstein in a westerly direction.

Straight ahead at the first crossing, take the second road on the right in the direction of Haidenholz Alm (1360m) and Ross Alm ( 1710m ). At the end of the driveway, follow the hiking trail to the Ross Alm. Now at the ridge left uphill to the Geigelstein (1808m).

Now we go steeply downhill from the promising summit and take the first turn-off to the left in the direction of Wirts-Alm and Geigelsteinbahn. Follow the hiking trail downhill, which soon becomes a well-developed road. Now it’s over 1100 meters downhill. Finally, we reach the starting point following the road in the valley and the lift route.

Alternative: A small detour to the Priener Hütte is a good idea for a longer tour (overnight stay option). If you want to walk fewer meters uphill, you can also plan the tour from the Kampenwandbahn. If you arrive by bus, crossing the Geigelstein from Schleching to Sachrang can also be exciting.

Hiking Map Geigelstein (1808m) – this lesser known hike in the Bavarian Alps features a formidable panoramic view from the top. But keep in mind: It’s a rather difficult hike to the top and you should plan roughyl 7-8 hours total. (the old chairlift does not work), You can refresh yourself at several huts on the route.

Photo tips that will make your Instagram pop! View of the Inn Valley and Bavarian foothills

The main spot on the Geigelstein on the summit: with the sublime view of the Inn Valley to the Wilder Kaiser, Watzmann, and the Bavarian foothills of the Alps, we experience a unique all-round view here.

Mountain Moments Photo Workshops provide Photo Tours for everybody, Alpine Experience for beginners and intermediate-level photographers with 3 to 6-hour routes, as well as Summit Experience for more advanced photographers and hikers. We have private workshops and group classes.

Some picturesque alpine pastures line the path and inspire traditional photographers.
