Sciliar Massif Hike Crossing from Alpe di Suisi – Ultra-Wide-Angle Lens for Ultra Photo Results on this Uber-Panoramic Tour
There are plenty of hiking routes designed for every level of experience, while some other backpacking trails, like the 19-kilometer Sciliar Massif challenge covered here, remain out of reach to some – and serve as a motivation for reaching the next level. This long and spectacular tour leads from the Alpe di Siusi over the landmark of South Tyrol, and we will tell you everything you need to know to become a part of this experience and make the most of it: hiking map, how to get there, all infos and dircetions, best photo spots.
The Sciliar (Schlern) presents itself impressively when approaching from the north, while the characteristic jagged shape on the massive western flank stands tall and impressive. Still not convinced? Keep reading further.
The tour is divided into a trio: the first part leads across the gentle alpine meadows of the Alpe di Siusi. In the middle part it goes steeply up into the Sciliar massif and along exciting high-altitude paths to the summit. But it’s the last section that’s a real challenge: the Bärenfalle (Bear trap) – a steep, narrow gorge with a breathtaking trail – will make even the fittest thighs burn on its approximately 1000 meters of descent over large steps and slippery scree.

At the Tierser Alp hut or the Schlern hut a night can be spent and optionally gentle evening or morning light games in this barren mountain landscape become much easier to access. Summit ascents on the Sciliar and the Maximilian via ferrata are worthwhile as difficult trail alternatives.
Route description and map – Hiking around Sciliar – your adventure starts at Alpe di Siusi
From the mountain station of the cable car Siusi – Alpe di Siusi, first through the village of Compatsch, cross the wide Joch street and follow the narrowing Fursch path trail in the direction of Tierser Alpl. Ascend via numerous steep serpentines and smaller scree paths to the Rosszähn saddle (2499m).
At the saddle turn right and follow the path slightly downhill to the Tierser Alpl hut. Then follow the high trail in the direction of the Sciliar with some rocky passages to the Sciliar alpine meadows and continue to a prominent junction. From there, take the path with the signs to the Schlernhaus and follow it to the hut.
A slightly descending path follows via the Sesselschwaige to the Bärenfalle. Descend the very steep path with several wooden bridges and steps through the narrow gorge.
After many hundred meters of altitude finally follow the forest path to the parking lot and the bus stop. Take the bus back to the starting point.

Photo tips that will make your Instagram pop – the Rosszähn Saddle viewpoint and the Bärenfalle mystique
There are countless beautiful photo motifs on this hike. The high plateaus of the Alpe di Siusi with the Sciliar massif as the background is the photo spot at the beginning of the tour. Later, at the Rosszähn saddle, there is a viewpoint to the left of the saddle for those who are free from giddiness.
Sunset and sunrise are each equally recommended with an overnight stay at the Tierser Alp-hut or Schlern-hut. Via ferrata walkers can optionally capture exciting deep views on the eastern part of the Schlern ridge with the ultra-wide-angle lens.

Mountain Moments Photo Workshops provide Photo Tours for everybody, Alpine Experience for beginners and intermediate-level photographers with 3 to 6-hour routes, as well as Summit Experience for more advanced photographers and hikers. We have private workshops and group classes.

The deep views in the Bärenfalle know how to inspire. If you are lucky, you will find a mystical atmosphere here at the early start of the tour with slowly dissipating residual cloud cover in the very steep rocky gully. Here is a good tip – capture a hiker from above with a wide-angle lens.
