Reaching the Hochgern summit, a beautiful peak in the Chiemgau Alps, is truly a memorable experience. The hiking trail is long but relatively easy, and the awards are the views of Loferer Steinberge, Kaiser Mountains, and Hohe Tauern National Park. To make it even better, in the middle of the Chiemgau Alps, the four alpine pastures invite you to take a culinary break.

Directions! This is how your hiking route looks like on a map

The starting point of this tour is the Hochgern car park at Marquartstein Castle.

The start is on the road towards Hochgern, always follow these signs. First, we hike on a forest road over the Agerschwendt Alm and past the mountain rescue hut in the forest.

From the Enzian hut, we continue on the path to reach the Alpine pastures up to the Hochgern hut (1461m).

Here we now follow the signs to the Hochgern summit on a beautiful hiking trail. Always follow the signs to Hochgern. From here we don’t let go of the hiking trail to the Hochgern summit (1461m) and trust the signs that lead us to the summit!

For the descent, we turn right at the junction towards Staudacher Alm/Schnappenkirche. Now downhill in serpentines, over a small saddle to the Staudacher Alm. Via a cart path, we turn left again into a hiking trail and hike to the Schnappenkirche.

From here, several paths lead back to the starting point (always keep in the direction of Marquartstein).

At the second junction turn right downhill. Then another five minutes along the road downhill. Turn right again. After another ten minutes, you will reach the starting point Marquartstein Castle/Hochgern car park.

Arrival: A8 exit Bernau, via Grassau to Marquartstein, left uphill to the Hochgern car park at Marquartstein Castle.

Public transport: By train via Rosenheim to Prien am Chiemsee. Change to bus 9505 in the direction of Reit im Winkl and get off at the Marquartstein Rathaus stop. From here it is a 20-minute walk to Marquartsstein Castle.
