The Chiemgau Alps, a mountain range in the Northern Limestone Alps that stretches over Germany and Austria (to a smaller extent) is considered a classic by many hikers, nature enthusiasts, and photographers. Kampenwand and its jagged rocky peaks is one of the reasons, as well as a colorful offering of hiking trails and great (gondola-powered) accessibility.
Numerous routes invite you to explore the summit region with a wonderful view of Lake Chiemsee, and Mountain Moments is here to give you the map, expert advice, and photography tips and tricks.
What’s so special about this hiking route? This is what awaits you on the location
This walk is easy and suitable for families – but can be extended for more ambitious hikers and photo enthusiasts. Those who are confident and have a love for heights can take the short ascent to the Kampenwand summit cross or the crossing of the Kampenwand rock ridge.
Nevertheless, the almost flat panoramic trail from the mountain station over to the Steinling Alm is also a great opportunity for inexperienced hikers to discover the fascinating mountain world in all its glory.
Directions! This is how your hiking route looks like on a map
The tour described here is one of the easiest hikes on the Kampenwand. The starting point is the mountain station of the Kampenwandbahn.
It goes past the Sonnen Alm in the direction of the Kampenwand hut (1510m). The road continues slightly downhill in the direction of Steinling Alm. This is the halfway point of this tour. Time for a snack break!
We hike back further downhill via the Schlechtenberg Alm. Then uphill via the summit cross vantage point (1387m) and the Möslarn Alm back to the Kampenwandbahn mountain station (starting point), which is already clearly visible.
This 4.5-kilometer route is quite easy and accessible to beginners and can be finished in 1.5 hours.
Alternatives
From the Kampenwand hut into the jagged rock ridge, partly secured with ropes and suspended over the three Kampenwand summits (west summit 1645, main summit, 1668m, east summit 1664m).
If you would like to take a longer hike up the Kampenwand, you can skip the cable car. From Aschau, you can go via the Schlechtenberg chapel to the Steinling-Alm.
The best way to start a mountain bike tour with an optional hike component is from Bernau am Chiemsee, going via the Gschwendtner Bach. The tour from Rottau via Hachau is also possible as a round trip. From the Steinling Alm, it is then better to continue on foot.
Photo tips that will make your Instagram pop! Green meadows, wide ridges, and Lake Chiemse
The rock formation, which can be seen from afar and rises up from green meadows like a wide ridge of rocks, makes the Kampenwand a great photo motif. On-site, we like to take a few breaks in the inviting alpine landscape and take exciting photos: the wide view of Lake Chiemsee and the Chiemgau Alps is incredibly beautiful!
Mountain Moments Photo Workshops provide Photo Tours for everybody, Alpine Experience for beginners and intermediate-level photographers with 3 to 6-hour routes, as well as Summit Experience for more advanced photographers and hikers. We have private workshops and group classes.
For the professional hikers among us, it is advisable to pull out the camera, especially when crossing the summit ridge. In addition, the Kampenwand east summit promises a free, unobstructed view to the east and north.
