Pinch Me Moment! Take This Neuschwanstein Dreamlike Hike Around the Fairytale Castle
On a 20-kilometer medium-difficulty dream hike to a Neuschwanstein castle, it is good to have company. There is a chance you will need to have witnesses, because some people may not believe the images were not drastically manipulated in Photoshop. You will hardly believe yourself, and you will realize why Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the biggest visitor magnets in the Bavarian Alps, and even Germany.
This tour combines all the well-known photo spots, spiced up with quiet corners and little-known views, is varied, and never gets boring. At around 20km in distance with 1000 meters of elevation gain, it is nothing but a quick sight to see on a trip to Europe!
Photo tips that will make your Instagram pop – the amazing Neuschwanstein Castle
This tour combines the most beautiful views of Neuschwanstein Castle and has a few more highlights up its sleeve. The views of the castle from the Marienbrücke (Marien bridge) and from the Tegelberghaus (mountain hut) are certainly known to every fan of the Alps.
Less known and also difficult to reach is the detour to the Homburg. A telephoto lens is worthwhile here. Not too highly frequented also is the Pöllatschlucht (Pöllat Gorge), located directly under the castle.
Mountain Moments Photo Workshops provide Photo Tours for everybody, Alpine Experience for beginners and intermediate-level photographers with 3 to 6-hour routes, as well as Summit Experience for more advanced photographers and hikers. We have private workshops and group classes.
Directions! This is how your Neuschwanstein route looks like on a map
The round starts at one of the parking lots at the Tegelbergbahn (gondola – travelers using public transport can start in Hohenschwangau or in Schwangau or directly at the castle bus terminal). At the Tegelbergbahn past the summer toboggan run and steeper, take the hiking trail to the left towards Homburg/Rohrkopfhütte (do not cross the ski slope).
Hikers who are free from giddiness and sure-footed can make a detour to the left to the Homburg (1172m). Otherwise, follow the hiking trail to the Rohrkopfhütte (1340m). Here continue on the hiking trail along the ski slope to just below the Tegelberghaus. At (1641m) keep to the right and descend briefly in the direction of Neuschwanstein.
The hiking trail now leads mostly downhill, eventually, it becomes steeper and gives a wonderful view of the Allgäu and the castle in several places, before you reach the Marienbrücke after a few hairpin bends. Proceed along with the crowds of visitors to the castle or shortly before right, into the Pöllat Gorge. Walk through it, finally along the road to Hohenschwangau and the castle of the same name.
From here a detour to the Alp Lake on the summer path or directly to the Swan Lake (789m). Go around this lake on the left and follow the hiking trails to Alterschrofen.
