On quite humane mountain paths, with only a few rope belays and since a few years also ice-free, the main goal is the Becherhaus. Like an eagle’s nest, the hut of the Italian Alpine Club towers above the Übeltalferner basin and rests in the midst of this breathtaking high alpine landscape. The surroundings are more than inviting from here to still walk the slowly dwindling glaciers.

Various hut tours – most of which are rather more serious alpine undertakings for which one should be properly prepared and equipped – start, end or run here on the main Alpine ridge. The rest of the landscape is also impressive: along the way you will find lush alpine plateaus with wild river courses and an almost untouched and intact high alpine nature.

Directions! This is how your hiking tour looks like on a map

Starting point is at the Stubai Glacier Road stop Neustift im Stubai – Sulzenauhütte. It goes directly over a bridge and immediately right a wonderful forest hiking trail uphill. After a few hairpin bends, cross the slope until you reach the wonderful Sulzenau-Hochtal. Keeping to the right, follow the trail to the Sulzenauhütte (2191m) and uphill to it. From here traverse east to the Grünausee (2330m) and along the glacier moraine uphill to the Seescharte (2780m).

The best time to experience this 25-kilometer route is from July to Septe.mber

From here there is often still snow in summer, but the glacier has already receded completely. Cross some stone fields/snowfields and along the flat ridge until just before the Signal summit (3392m). Finally, right the somewhat exposed and rocky ridge to the Wilder Freiger (3418m). Return the route to the Signal summit and turn right down the ridge to the Becherhaus (Rifugio Gino Biasi al Bicchiere, 3195m), which lies prominently on the ridge.

Return the way to the Signal summit and here now either the same way back to the Seescharte or depending on conditions and alpine exploration urge – this route is hardly marked and leads partly over glacier remnants – keep right and over the Freigerscharte/Roter Grat (3099m) and over the Freiger lake (2490m) to the Nürnberger hut (2278m). From here along the material cableway always downhill to the Bsuchalm (1580m) in the Langental. From here, follow the road or the trail markings downhill until you reach the Stubai Glacier Road. The bus stop “Neustift im Stubaital Abzweigung Nürnberger Hütte” is located slightly out of the valley near a larger parking lot for the “Wilde-Wasser-Weg”.

Photo tips  that will make your Instagram pop – Becherhaus and Sulzenautal

With little additional effort, it is possible to hike to Sterzing, the Brenner Pass or even in the direction of the Ötztal (Ötz Valley) or the Texel Group (ice and sometimes climbing equipment required). The return journey from the valleys can be made comfortably by bus or train to Innsbruck.

The highlight of this tour is the location of the Becherhaus. Like an eagle’s nest, it clings to the high alpine ridge and seems to hover above the Übeltalferner. The upper Sulzenautal is still almost pristine and is not stingy with high alpine natural charms. Lush grass and wild brooks adorn the valley and are a real eye-catcher, especially from the bird’s eye view we are hiking.
